Colors for Summer Jewelry
As a designer we have to think about the upcoming seasons, usually 2 or 3 ahead of time. But even though we have to think ahead, we so enjoy relishing in the seasonal colors at hand. Right now my mind is distracted with the colors of summer and how they vary depending on where you are in the world. As someone who lives on the coast, my favorite summer colors are blues, light greens and a variety...

How To Pick The Right Port-A-John Line →
npr: nprfreshair: 40,000 people will be coming here to Chicago to run the marathon this weekend. Lots of well-hydrated people means long Port-A-John lines, so if you’re running, here’s some strategy:  Your first instinct will be to choose the shortest line, but this can be wrong. Choose the line with the best female to male ratio, even if it’s not the shortest line. Most men, if they’re...

Launching new online store ~ pamelahuizenga.com
Launching a new online store is much like opening a physical store … the anxiety of getting everything right, the wording, spelling, lighting, photos, decor, advertising and spreading the word … very much the same. And then there is the waiting for people to come in the front door, browse around.  However, it seems to me that the online store is much more difficult. Customer service,...

Designer stuck in business mode
Paperwork, bills, emails, phone calls, piles of papers … these are all nightmarish thoughts for a designer. Or at least it is for me. But what is even worse is getting stuck in that mode and not being able to sit in the studio and be creative. For the most part, paperwork isn’t creative. I don’t subscribe to “creative bookkeeping” so, that takes the creative out of...

Fall and Winter colors
One of the jobs and challenges of designers is to guess, predict and sometimes dictate upcoming trends, styles and fashions.  As a jewelry designer, I have to try to predict colors. I tend not to design trendy jewelry but rather to choose color combinations that accompany the current clothing trends.  SO, what do you all think will be the big color trends this fall and winter? Crisp, clean...

When you ask for the moon ...
Ok, I am going to get really dorky right now, but I can’t help but say this … “when you ask for the moon you sometimes get some stars”! Seriously! I’m not being overly dramatic or anything. I recently put out a job ad and asked for the moon; creative, organized, graphics, office management, photographer, computer wiz. It’s a lot to ask of one person. Well, I...

Artistic Discoveries
For those of us who live in large or semi-large cities, we forget that creativity and art exists everywhere … even in little, out of the way towns. I was reminded of this fact while travelling through the mountains of western North Carolina. Every so often we would drive by a really cool sign, a unique business name or a stunning restored farmhouse. Hidden off the main roads are local galleries,...

Knowing when to say "Help"!
I can be a control freak at times, I know I can. I like to be involved with all aspects of the company and know what’s going on. On occasion I get lucky and find someone I can trust to help take over something; Jessica and the photography and the shipping of parcels. Both of those tasks take skill and patience … things I am somewhat lacking in! Don’t get me wrong, I love taking...

Favorite Stone?
Very often people will ask me what my favorite stone is. I have a hard time answering. It changes throughout the year, the month, the day! The appeal of a stone involves more than just the color. It is the shape and the characteristics of the stone. And rarely does it have to do with the value, although it can often include the rarity. So, today, right at this moment, my favorite stone is...

Gold Chain and Beads
As a designer and artist it is difficult to be on vacation and not be able to “create” things! Luckily I enjoy working with wire and chain and have been making some great necklaces! It’s fun, therapeutic and productive, a perfect late night activity while on vacation with my family. So far I have done 9 necklaces; chrysoprase, kunzite, lapis, natural tourmaline crystals,...

It’s ironic that I posted a photo of one of my multi-colored tourmaline bracelets the other day. Because today I was lucky enough to view some amazing hot pink and deep pink tourmalines. Hopefully they will be mine soon; but only for the right price! But ohhhhhhhhh, they were luscious! If they become mine I’ll share some pics with you!
