Colors for Summer Jewelry

As a designer we have to think about the upcoming seasons, usually 2 or 3 ahead of time. But even though we have to think ahead, we so enjoy relishing in the seasonal colors at hand.

Right now my mind is distracted with the colors of summer and how they vary depending on where you are in the world.

As someone who lives on the coast, my favorite summer colors are blues, light greens and a variety of whites. I think of linen, jute and canvas. The stones I am enamored with are Aquamarines, moonstones, quartz and prasiolite.

You can mix in a few other colors or stay within one color scheme and create some fantastic pieces! Here are a few of my current picks for summer …

Pamela Huizenga, a Native Floridian, is a jewelry designer and stone cutter specializing in unique and One-of-a-Kind jewelry using colorful gemstones, unusual fossils and Rose Cut Diamonds. Her designs celebrate the colors, textures and imperfections found in nature and she uses them to create jewelry as individual as those who wear it. Her line includes signature multi-stone bracelets, pendants, earrings, rings and cufflinks made in 22k Gold, 18k Gold and in Sterling Silver. Each piece of jewelry is handmade and completely unique. Pamela has been involved in the Jewelry industry since she was 16. Studying the fine art of stone cutting at an early age (16) gave Pamela a deep appreciation and respect for these gifts from Mother Earth.

40,000 people will be coming here to Chicago to run the marathon this weekend. Lots of well-hydrated people means long Port-A-John lines, so if you’re running, here’s some strategy:

Your first instinct will be to choose the shortest line, but this can be wrong. Choose the line with the best female to male ratio, even if it’s not the shortest line. Most men, if they’re going Number One, will see long lines and choose to go on a tree, fire hydrant, or friend. This means most men standing in line are going Number Two, which in turn means a line with more men will be moving much, much slower than a line with more women.

Also, here’s a list of actual Port-A-John company names. For my money, you can’t beat “Doodie Calls.”

Launching a new online store is much like opening a physical store … the anxiety of getting everything right, the wording, spelling, lighting, photos, decor, advertising and spreading the word … very much the same. And then there is the waiting for people to come in the front door, browse around.

However, it seems to me that the online store is much more difficult. Customer service, personal touch and friendly staff doesn’t get factored in until AFTER the sale has been made. We don’t get a chance to wow customers with our knowledge or our passion for our work. We cannot make suggestions or ask questions to help them find that perfect item for themselves or for a gift. That puts a lot of pressure on the website itself … how can it do all that without us?

So, here is a question for you … how do we add our passion, customer service and knowledge to an online store??

Designer stuck in business mode

Paperwork, bills, emails, phone calls, piles of papers … these are all nightmarish thoughts for a designer. Or at least it is for me. But what is even worse is getting stuck in that mode and not being able to sit in the studio and be creative.

For the most part, paperwork isn’t creative. I don’t subscribe to “creative bookkeeping” so, that takes the creative out of my office work. For me to really hunker down and focus on the “businessy” side of things takes a lot of effort and usually involves a raging headache, literally. Even worse than the headache is the fact that I cannot seem to move effortlessly in between the office and the studio. It is two separate worlds and somehow brings up two different me’s. I am a gemini by birth and I do have a habit of taking on multiple roles, jobs, projects etc … And yes, I do tend to get absorbed by the task at hand; Mom or designer or desktop publisher or wife or party planner or taxi or or or … I do see a pattern here. While I may be able to multi-task quite well (or at least I think so) I cannot seem to “multi-personality” very well. I guess I should be relieved, although it could come in quite handy some days when the hats need to be changed quickly and with as little drama as possible.

So, I have learned something about myself tonight … it takes my personalities a while to catch up to the hat changes … perhaps I should start carrying a hat rack.

Hi I am interested in the price of the turquoise and silver cuff bracelet that is shown on the blog page. Is it the same one that was featured in the Veranda magazine recently?

I believe the bracelet most recently shown in Veranda was my rough aquamarine bracelet. They are actually flexible bracelets, not cuffs. They are flexible and very comfortable. A turquoise bracelet like the one in Tumblr is handmade in sterling silver and each bracelet is a one-of-a-kind. This pieces retails for around $1500. Please let me know if you have any questions.
